America’s Thanksgiving Parade

5401 Woodward Ave, Detroit, MI 48202

America’s Thanksgiving Parade

Since 1924, Detroiters have celebrated Thanksgiving Day with a grand parade in the city’s Downtown. Tied with Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade as the second-oldest Thanksgiving parade in the country, the tradition was started by Charles Wendel of the J.L. Hudson Company department store after he saw the Toronto Santa Claus Parade. The parade features marching bands, the Distinguished Clown Corps, floats, papier-mache heads called the Big Head Corps, balloons and Santa Claus who appears at the end.
